Morning report F/330 for January 22, 1945

Station: Izier, Belgium, vK4700
Record of events: As of 16 Jan 45 - Company left Joubieval mounted on tanks at 1630. Arrived at Barclain at 2030. Roads jammed with traffic. Left Barclain with platoon of tanks & 1 platoon of G Co at 2130 to aid 36th Armd Inf holding out in that town. No communication with 36th & enemy tanks operating in town which had already knocked out 10 of our light tanks & 6 medium tanks. ON route to Sterpigny leading platoon was pinned down by machine gun from tank and forced to withdraw slightly. Enemy tank was knocked out by fire from our leading tank which was directed by T/Sgt Manning. Because of light caused by burning tank, company was forced to change route & swing to right to gain entrance to town. Route reconoitered by S/Sgt Hower. After Co. was in town & contact was established with friendly forces S/Sgt Anthony returned & guided tanks into position in town. At daylight Co. attacked to clean out town but was unsuccessful because of two enemy tanks, Mark 5's which held successful road blocks on main street. 155 Arty & tank fire knocked out one enemy tank and withdrew. At end of day we held 1/2 of town. During day our tanks knocked out 3 enemy tanks trying to attack from rear and left flank. As of 17 Jan 45 - Remainder of Bn came to town and followed in behind as company again set out to clean out town. Attack progressed well and last enemy tank withdrew. Town cleared at 1330. Attack harrassed by enemy tank fire from woods but mission finally accomplished. Company with E Co. on right started attack for objective which was edge of woods 2000 yards NE of town of Sterpigny. Enemy direct fire weapon stopped company at LD. Because of open ground and absolutely no cover available, company was forced to retire approximately 50 yards leaving several casualties on the field. Some of casualties returned under cover of darkness. As of 18 Jan 45 - Company with platoon of G Company started in attack behind E Co at 0600 for same objective as day before. Upon gaining woods, Co moved to left of E Co. Most trouble cause by dense woods & deep snow which caused maintenance of control to be difficult. Objective finally reached at 1300 and patrols pushed to front and flanks. Co set up OP 1000 yards to front overlooking town of Halconreux. OP supported by section of tanks brought form rear and placed in position by T/Sgt Manning. Co. was to be relieved at 2130 but plan changed and Co continued into position for the night. Patrols sent to contact friendly unit on left were unsuccessful. Several prisoners taken during the day. As of 19 Jan 45 - Company awaited out relief and finally was relieved at 1345 by F Co. 335th Inf, Co marched back to Barclain, mounted trucks and went to town of Izier for reorganization. 22 Jan 45 - Company remained in same location and followed training schedule from 0830 to 1600.
