At 0430 outpost pltn was hit and surrounded by enemy, estimated to be a company. At 0445 enemy hit left flank heavily, shorty after that, the right flank was hit by the enemy infantry in waves. 0500 on orders, the outpost pltn withdrew along previously determined route after it had brought flanking fire to bear on the attacking forces and had accounted for at least 40 of the enemy. The outpost pltn was then used to strengthen the flanks and protect the rear. The unit on our left withdrew and the enemy broke around our right flank. A squad was sent out to clean up behind the right flank and 2 enemy tanks moved north along the amin road on left flank. Patrols were sent out to both flanks and to the rear but where unable to contact anyone except the enemy. We used maximum artillery and mortar fire, our 60's and 81's to help hold off the enemy horde, in the face of overwhelming odds our men showed a most miraculous courage and we stood our ground to the man for the entire 12 hr counter-attack. At 1600 the unit on our left was regaining the ground lost and contact Patrols came up fr units moving to our rear. As evidence of the fight 30 or more Germans dead were strewn along our company front in addition to the 40 or more at the outpost pltn and those killed by artillery fire in the woods to our front; 8 prsioners and 5 wounded were picked up. Our lossed were 8 KIA, 5 MIA and 8 wounded. Both Bn and Regt Cmdrs commended our troops. 19 Apr 45 patrols were sent out to the front to inspect blown bridges and to see if the enemy had withdrawn completely. Positions were improved.
